I’ve had my readers request more blog posts (hehe – it feels funny saying that, but it’s true!) but I am unsure what to write about. My daily life is just like anyone else’s, morning coffee, shower, off to work. I have routines like anyone else, except I do them in a van. When people find out I live in a van many say “Oh, I could NEVER do that!” What they really mean is they don’t want to.

Of course, having children and pets would complicate the issue, but the fact is that humans really don’t need a lot of stuff to survive. In today’s world, with all the commercials and ads and celebrities telling you what the next big thing is, and what you just need to have, combined with your co-workers and family members needing to have and having and showing off their cool new gadget, it’s no wonder everyone just buys, Buys, BUYS! It’s not our fault that we fell prey to their Profit.

The time is now. We have to start living humble now, intentionally, before we are forced into it. It will be a lot more uncomfortable if you are forced into it. A simple way to start is to clean out the space you currently live in. Take a good look around you and notice all the things that you don’t use daily. There are many that feel like “no, everything I own, I love.” However there is something that shocks me to think about. I do have a storage unit, and there are things in there that I thought were important enough to keep. Important things like photo albums and yearbooks, my (supposedly) portable reiki table (that weighs about 100 pounds) and my off season clothes. But most of the stuff that I have in there is already an unknown and it’s been less than a year! Did I really need to keep it? Do you really need all that stuff around you?

I have my electric kettle that I use every day to make coffee. I can also use it to boil water for noodles or oatmeal so that was a handy purchase. I have my mini fridge that stores my milk and yogurt, and whatever else I pick up that might need refridgeration. I have an airtight tupperware that holds my dry goods, very important to discourage the critters. My Jackery power bank is a need that I am so grateful to have. I have items that I use on occasion and STILL have items that I haven’t used yet but feel the need to have them with me.

I am able to work a corporate job, maintain cleanliness and professionalism, be comfortable and keep my paycheck. I don’t have a landlord or a bank taking most of my paycheck from me. I do have to think twice about any purchases I want to make though. I don’t have much room for clothing and I need to make sure that it doesn’t wrinkle, and any new gadget I want to pick up will need to find a new home in my van somewhere so I have to be very thoughtful about what I buy.

I think that more people could do what I’m doing and thrive at it. You’re selling yourself short if you think you can’t. We humans are amazing, resilient creatures that can survive much more that your imagination could hold. Adaptability is what has kept us alive on this planet, and don’t let them tell you that the society you see around you is “just the way it is”. It’s created and manufactured and as soon as you see that, you won’t be able to unsee it. It’s time to create a new society, parallel with the one that is crumbling.
While my life is not the exciting, trail blazing life of a van lifer, I do have some things to offer to the world. I do dabble in fiction, perhaps I could post a story sometime. I created this blog to entertain myself and hopefully I will be able to entertain you all as well, in some fashion. Talk to you soon!
